Chapter six

Dawson

I barely said two words to Trinity. I couldn’t wait to get out of the house. Every second I waste provides another opportunity for some idiot to hit on Harlow. Club Curve is only a half hour’s drive from our little town, but it’s taking an eternity, even with my foot pressed all the way down on the gas.

It took all the willpower I had to resist kissing her last night. If my daughter wasn’t with us, I would’ve made love to Harlow on the goddamn kitchen table. She wouldn’t have left my house. God how I’m craving to see her in that tight dress tonight. But it still stings she didn’t trust me enough to tell me about her new gig.

She’s a librarian, for God’s sake. I still can’t get over it. I had her pegged as shy, introverted, and bookish. Now, I’m confronted with this new image. Harlow has a rebellious streak and she’s highly capable of keeping secrets. It’s an irresistible blend to a guy like me, my favorite flavor of kryptonite. The thought of her letting loose, allowing me to do every filthy thing I’ve ever jacked off fantasizing about is driving me insane. I can’t handle the thought of anyone hitting on her. She’s turned me into a possessive, fucking caveman.

As I walk in, the music hits me first, an overpowering bass that vibrates through the floor. I let my eyes adjust to the light as the strobes paint the room in flashes of pink and purple, casting moving shadows that make the mass of people appear to be dancing in sync. How will I ever find her in here?

I wade through the throng, my senses inundated, barely able to think.

“Lucky me. You’re just the man I’m looking for.” A woman, with raven-black hair tumbling down to her shoulders and smoky eyes, falls into step beside me. Her tight, fiery red dress clings to her curves, sexuality radiating from every pore. She angles her body towards me with a sultry pick-up grin. “Dance with me?” I can barely hear her over the music.

There’s no denying her appeal, but she’s hitting on the wrong man. I fake an apologetic smile. “Sorry, but I’m with someone.”

“It’s your loss,” she says with a frown, and poof. She’s gone. That was easy. She sashays to the dance floor and I peer through the throng, searching for Harlow. Where the fuck is she? Another woman approaches me.

“Maybe what you’re looking for is right in front of you.” This one is the polar opposite of the first. Her hair is platinum blonde, cut sharp above her neck. She’s dressed in a sleek silver mini-dress and looks like she stepped straight out of a sci-fi movie. She wraps an arm around mine. “Buy me a drink?” she asks, batting her long lashes.

Jesus Christ. I hope to hell Harlow isn’t hitting on every guy who walks in here. “I can’t, I’m going to fuck my girlfriend as soon as I find her.” Couldn’t resist.
